Preparation of Salts

6.9  Preparation of Salts

Soluble and insoluble salts

  • Soluble salts are salts that dissolve in water at room temperature, and non-soluble salts are salts that do not dissolve in water at room temperature.
  • The following table shows the solubility of salts in water.

Salt Solubility in water
\(NO_3\,^- \) All nitrate salts are soluble in water

\(Na^+\)

\(K^+\)

\(NH_4\,^+\)

All salts for sodium, potassium and ammonium are soluble in water
\(Cl^-\)

All salts are soluble in water except for

  • Silver chloride, \(AgCl\)
  • Lead(II) chloride, \(PbCl_2\)
\(SO_4\,^{2-} \)

All salts are soluble in water except for

  • Lead(II) sulphate, \(PbSO_4\)
  • Calcium sulphate, \(CaSO_4\)
  • Barium sulphate, \(BaSO_4\)
\(CO_3\,^{2-} \)

All carbonate salts are insoluble in water except for

  • Potassium carbonate, \(K_2CO_3\)
  • Sodium carbonate, \(Na_2CO_3\)
  • Ammonium carbonate, \((NH_4)_2CO_3\)
