Energy Sector

4.2  Energy Sector

1. Social-scientific issues

  • Use of non-renewable energy
  • Use of fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases

2. Examples of several socio-scientific issues that are related to the environment:

  • Deforestation
  • Global warming
  • Air polution
  • Indiscriminate waste disposal
  • Water pollution

3. Socio-scientific issues of burning of fossil fuels produce greenhouse gases that cause global warming and extreme climate changes.

4. Source of energy

  • Non-renewable energy
    • Examples: fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, coal), nuclear energy
    • Disadvantages:
      • supply become scarce
      • environmental pollution (carbon monoxide & carbon dioxide)
  • Renewable energy
    • Examples: Hydro, solar, wind, geothermal, wave
    • Advantages:
      • clean energy
      • green energy
      • pollution free

5. Application of green technology

  • Wind energy source replace fossil fuel in the future.
  • Hydro energy source become one of the main energy sources in the world to generate electricity.
  • Solar energy source has potential to be developed in Malaysia.
  • Geothermal energy source replace fossil fuel.
