1.9  Problem Solving

EXAMPLE 1:

Mashitah has RM 4 530 in savings. His father distributed RM 150 equally to Mashitah and his 2 younger siblings. How much money does Mashitah have now?

SOLUTION:

Mashitah's savings: RM 4 530
Money given by Mashitah's father: RM 150 divide 3
Mashitah's total money: RM \(\Box\)

Mathematic Equation:
\(4\,530+(150\div3)=\Box\)

Solve the division first.

\(150\div3=50\)

Substitute into the equation and solve.

\(4\,530+(50)=4\,580\)

Therefore, Mashitah's total money is RM 4 580.

EXAMPLE 2:

A cement company has sent 4 trucks full of cement packages to a construction site. Each truck carries 45 packages of cement. On the way, 8 cement packages were torn. How many packages of cement are still good?

SOLUTION:

Number of trucks: 4 trucks
Number of cement packages in 1 truck: 45 packages
Number of torn packages: 8 packages
Number of good packages = \(\Box\) packages

Mathematic Equation:
\(4\times45-8=\Box\)

Solve the multiplication first.

\(\begin{array}{lr} &45\\ \times&4\\ \hline&180\\ \hline \end{array}\)

Substitute into the equation and solve.

\(180-8=172\)

Therefore, 172 packages are still good.
