Chapter 1: Listening Skills

What you need to learn in this chapter

This chapter focuses on developing students' listening skills, enabling them to understand and interpret spoken texts across various contexts. Students will learn how to use appropriate listening strategies in different situations to effectively grasp information. By recognizing the features of spoken genres related to familiar topics, students will build confidence in their listening abilities.

The chapter will guide students to understand specific information and details from longer texts on a range of familiar topics, encouraging independent comprehension of more complex spoken material. Students will also learn to recognize attitudes or opinions within longer spoken texts, with minimal support, enhancing their ability to critically analyze what they hear.

In addition, students will develop the ability to understand longer sequences of classroom instructions and more complex questions without significant assistance. They will also practice understanding longer simple narratives, helping them follow stories and identify key information more easily.

Students will be encouraged to use context and surrounding words to infer the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, improving their overall listening and comprehension skills. By recognizing typical features of spoken genres at the word, sentence, and text levels, they will further sharpen their listening abilities and increase their understanding of various spoken materials.

By the end of this chapter, students will be more confident in their ability to listen to and comprehend a wider range of spoken texts, using a variety of strategies to decode, understand, and respond to complex spoken information.
