Dative Bond

5.5  Dative Bond

Definition of Dative Bond or Coordinate Bond
Is a type of covalent bond where the electron pair that is shared comes from one atom only.

The image illustrates the formation of a dative bond in the hydronium ion (H3O+). It is divided into four steps: 1. **Step 1:** Oxygen atom in H2O achieves an octet electron arrangement, and H+ has no electrons in its shell. 2. **Step 2:** The lone pair of electrons on the oxygen atom in H2O will be shared with the hydrogen ion (H+), forming a dative bond. 3. **Step 3:** In the hydronium ion (H3O+), the oxygen atom, O, and all hydrogen atoms, H, have achieved stable octet and duplet electron arrangements, respectively.
