Basic dictionary skills, such as using picture dictionaries, will be developed to help students locate and understand words in context. Additionally, students will practice identifying and understanding numbers in both numeral and word forms, including cardinal and ordinal numbers.
The chapter includes reading comprehension exercises that focus on linear texts (e.g., descriptions, rhymes) and non-linear texts (e.g., forms, lists). Students will gain the ability to follow simple instructions and directions, as well as recognize and articulate initial, medial, and final sounds in single-syllable words.
Phonics skills such as blending two to four phonemes into words and segmenting words for spelling will also be practiced. Students will read and comprehend various thematic topics including the alphabet, colors, family members, nature, occupations, parts of the body, sports, time, and more, while reinforcing their understanding of simple past and present tense usage, synonyms, antonyms, and vocabulary.
