Science Chapter 5: Plants
5.1 Plant reproduction

  • Plants reproduce differently by type and technology can also be used to propagate plants.

5.1

Plant reproduction

Way of plants reproduction

  • Plants needed to reproduce in order to avoid extinction.

  • There are multiple ways of plant reproduction:-

1.

Seeds

  • Plant that reproduces through seeds.
    • Watermelon
    • Guava
    • Chili
    • Tomato
    • Papaya

2.

Spores

  • Non-flowering plants that reproduce through spores.
    • Mosses
    • Mushroom
    • Fern

3.

Underground stem

  • Underground stem that will bud and form a new tree.
    • Potato
    • Carrot
    • Ginger
    • Onion

4.

Leaves

  • Plants that reproduce through parents' leaves.
    • Aloe vera
    • Setawar tree

5.

   Stem cutting

  • When the stem of the plant can reproduce a new plant after being planted.
    • Sugarcane
    • Cassava

6.

   Sucker

  • Saplings around the parent tree can grow into new trees.
    • Pineapple
    • Bamboo
    • Banana tree

Importance of plant reproduction

  • Plants always reproduce to increase their numbers and maintain their species.

  • A species is a group of living things that have the same nature or type.

Single plant, different ways of reproduction

  • There are plants that have multiple ways of reproductions.

  • For examples:-

Plants First ways of reproduction  The second way of reproduction
1. Water spinach Stem cutting  Seeds
2. Tapioca  Stem cutting  Underground stem
3 Banana tree Sucker  Seeds
4. Hibiscus tree  Stem cutting  Seeds

The technology of plant reproduction

  • Other than the conventional way of plant reproduction, we can breed plant by using new technology.

  • The commonly used technology in plant reproduction are:-

1.

Tissue culture

- Produce new plants from the tissue of a parent plant that is placed inside a nutrient medium.

2.

Marcottage

- Marcottage can increase the number of plants without planting the seeds.
