Perimeter and Area

6.3 Perimeter and Area

We will learn to determine the perimeter of a polygon shape with up to eight sides.

  PERIMETER

The perimeter is the sum of the lengths of all the sides of a closed two-sided figure where the ends of two or more lines meet the other ends.

The standard symbol for perimeter in mathematics is the letter P.

Perimeter of a Square / Cube
EXAMPLE:

\(\text{P}=a+a+a+a=4a\)

Perimeter of a Rectangle
EXAMPLE:

\(\text{P}=a+b+a+b=2a+2b\)

Perimeter of an Equilateral Triangle
EXAMPLE:

An equilateral triangle has 3 equal sides.

\(\text{P}=a+a+a=3a\)
