Components of water molecule
1 oxygen atom, 2 hydrogen atoms
Polar water molecule
Water molecules have a negative partial charge at the oxygen end and a positive partial charge at both ends of the hydrogen atom
Specific heat capacity of water
Water has a high specific heat because water is able to absorb large quantities of heat and minimal temperature rise
Adhesive force of water
A force created when water attached to other surfaces
Cohesive force of water
A force created when water molecules that attached to one another
Importance of cohesive and adhesive force of water
Both of these forces produce the capillary action to transport water in a narrow space such as a xylem tube
Universal solvent
A solvent that can dissolve most substances such as water
Organic compounds
Compounds that contain carbon elements such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids
Water compound
An inorganic compound as there is no carbon element in the compound
Hydrogen bond
The chemical bonds that decompose as water changes from liquid to water vapour
