Phytoremediation
A treatment method that uses plants for the purpose of degradation, extraction or elimination of pollute substances from soil and water.
Phytoremediation words originate from:
Phyton (plant) + remediate (repair)
Substances that are eliminated by phytoremediation
Heavy metals, harmful nutrients & microorganisms
The importance of phytoremediation in water waste treatment
Overcome lack of clean water, issue of water pollution & reduce the cost of water treatment.
Sunflower
Act as hyperaccumulator that eliminates heavy metals like zinc, chromium, lead & nickel and also radioactive substance such as caesium & strontium.
Water hyacinth
An example of a plant that has long roots that can accumulate heavy metals like copper & lead in water

A plant that can accumulate heavy metals and nutrients in the waste plant.

A plant that can absorb mercury from the soil & heavy metal like cadmium from the water.
