Elements of lipids
1) Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen 2) Has higher ratio of hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms
Types of lipids
Fats, waxes, phospholipids and steroids
Triglycerides
1) An ester formed from the process of condensation of one molecule of glycerol with three molecules of fatty acids 2) Examples of triglycerides are fats and oils
Types of fatty acids
Saturated fats and unsaturated fats
Similarities between saturated fats and unsaturated fats
Both contain the elements of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, glycerol, fatty acids, and are non-polar molecules
Characteristics of saturated fats
Fatty acids have a single bond between carbons, have no addition of hydrogen atoms, exist in solid form at room temperature. For example, butter and animal fats
Characteristics of unsaturated fats
Fatty acids that have at least one double bond between the carbons, the double bond can still accept the addition of hydrogen, exist in liquid form at room temperature
Waxes
Contains one molecule of alcohol that combines with another molecule of fatty acid and is waterproof
Phospholipids
The main component of the plasma membrane that made up of one molecule of glycerol, two molecules of fatty acids, and one group of phosphate
Steroids
Is a type of lipid that does not have fatty acids. Examples: cholesterol, testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone
