Twins
Refer to two or more children that are born from one pregnancy
Two types of twins
Identical twins and fraternal twins
Identical twins
Twins who share the same placenta lead to the same appearance and gender
Fraternal twins
Twins that have their own placenta and give the possibility of different sexes of the twins
Differences identical and fraternal twins
Identical twins fertilize one ovum and one sperm but for fraternal twins it fertilize two ovum and two sperm
Conjoined twins
Identical twins who have physical or organs that are still attached together after birth
Development of conjoined twins
Develop when there is incomplete division of the embryo in identical twins
Characteristics of conjoined twins
Typically the chest, abdomen or back of the twin partner will be attached, possibly even sharing one or two internal organs
Differences identical and fraternal twins
The genetic content and physical properties of identical twins are the same because they develop from the same zygote, in contrast to fraternal twins who have different zygotes
Sex of both identical twins
Identical twins must each have the same sex as it involves fertilization from the same one ovum and one sperm
