Wastewater treatment using electrocoagulation (2)
Electrocoagulation applies two processes, namely electrolysis and coagulation
Electrocoagulation
Electrolysis
At the anode, a metal electrode such as aluminium ionises in the electrolyte to produce positively charged aluminium ions, Al3+
Electrolysis
At the cathode, hydrogen ions, H+ are selected to be discharged to form hydrogen gas
Electrolysis
Hydrogen gas bubbles are released from the cathode and rise to the water surface
Coagulation (1)
Coagulation occurs when aluminium ions, Al3+, hydroxide ions, OH– and pollutants in the wastewater combine to produce coagulants known as floc
Coagulation (2)
Floc, trapped in hydrogen gas bubbles released from the cathode, are brought up to the water surface
Coagulation (4)
The remaining flocs sinks and accumulates at the base
Procedure in moist blue litmus paper test (1)
Place a piece of moist blue litmus paper close to the mouth of the test tube containing the gas
Procedure in moist blue litmus paper test (2)
If the moist blue litmus paper turns red, the gas in the test tube is acidic
