A simple chemical cell
Is made up of two different metals immersed in an electrolyte and connected to an external circuit with connecting wires
Example of a simple chemical cell
Electrochemical series showing arrangement of ions in order of electropositivity
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes (Mg becomes the -ve terminal and Cu becomes the +ve terminal) (1)
Mg which donates electrons forms Mg ions and dissolves in the electrolyte (Cu(II) sulphate solution)
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes (Mg becomes the -ve terminal and Cu becomes the +ve terminal) (2)
Mg acts as the negative terminal of the chemical cell
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes (Mg becomes the -ve terminal and Cu becomes the +ve terminal) (3)
The released electrons will flow through the external circuit from Mg to Cu which acts as the positive terminal of the chemical cell
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes (Mg becomes the -ve terminal and Cu becomes the +ve terminal) (4)
Electrons from Mg are received by the Cu(II) ion from the electrolyte and not by the H ion because the Cu(II) ion is less electropositive than the H ion
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes (Mg becomes the -ve terminal and Cu becomes the +ve terminal) (5)
Solid Cu is formed and deposited on the Cu strip
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes (Mg becomes the -ve terminal and Cu becomes the +ve terminal) (6)
Cu acts as the positive terminal of the chemical cell
Chemical reactions in a chemical cell with different metal electrodes
The flow of electrons from the negative terminal to the positive terminal through the external circuit will produce electrical energy
