Reading and Writing: R Control Vowel Words

R Control Vowel Words

Vowels escorted by 'R' are often difficult for children to learn. Oftentimes, students are taught 'long and short vowels' and the learner does not know what to call words such as rope, far, bird, higher, dirt.

Basic readings or texts will often offer individual instruction rather than systematic direction in using the controlled vowel. Word building activities will help students recognize speech patterns, such as swapping the first letter or letters in a controlled vowel, i.e. swapping far to car, far to jar, and so on.

This is why we need to focus on the 44 sounds in spelling and not just consonants and long and short vowels, which is what is true about teaching spelling.

Here's a great example of a word-learning phrase used to help students learn the patterns and anomalies of some of the vowels controlled by R.

Activities to Build Decoding Skills With R-Control Vocals

  • Word Building: Using individual letter cards and a small personal pocket chart, have students construct a controlled word from the list below, model the first word and then define future words.
    • For example - more, store, burrow.

  • Word Filling: This is an excellent activity for controlled sounds which can be made in different ways.
    • For example - oars, floors, doors.

  • Rhyming Rhyme: Give students a set of controlled words and ask them to write a rhyming rhyme, such as heart, smart, chart, part, start

Word Cards for Word Wall

You can print the word cards below and have students physically arrange the words by placing Velcro or magnets behind the words to arrange them.

You can also use the group of word provided, which involve cutting out words and pasting them into the correct column.

Do the word in small groups, or create an activity at the reading center that two or three children can complete together.
